American Express Membership Rewards® to Hilton: Why This Transfer Can Be Better Than Most People Think

Everyone has heard the standard advice when it comes to Hilton points:

  • “Half a cent per point.”

  • “Not a great transfer partner.”

  • “Better to use your points elsewhere.”

That perspective is common—but it often overlooks one important detail: American Express Membership Rewards® transfer to Hilton Honors at a 1:2 ratio, meaning every 1 Membership Rewards® point becomes 2 Hilton points! That changes the math considerably.

For many travelers, Membership Rewards points are earned through cards such as:

That means many cardholders may already have access to Hilton transfers without needing to earn Hilton points directly.

A Real Example: Five Nights in Paris

I recently returned from a five-night stay at the Grand Powers Hotel, located in the heart of Paris.

The total cash price for the stay was $5,129.

Instead of paying cash, I redeemed 480,000 Hilton Honors points. Because of Hilton’s 5th Night Free benefit for having Hilton Silver status or higher, I only needed enough points for four nights. (You can get Hilton Silver status or higher by holding a Hilton credit card) At face value, that works out to roughly 1.07 cents per Hilton point.

That’s already a respectable redemption for Hilton—but it becomes much more compelling when you remember those points may have originated from Membership Rewards.

The Transfer Math Changes Everything

Those 480,000 Hilton points required only 240,000 Membership Rewards® points because of the standard 1:2 transfer ratio.

So in reality, I used:

  • 240,000 Membership Rewards® points to generate 480,000 Hilton Honors points which covered four nights (with the fifth night free!)

Now run the math from the original currency:

$5,129 ÷ 240,000 = 2.14 cents per Membership Rewards point!

That is a strong return for a hotel redemption—especially in a major European city during expensive travel dates!

Why Most People Evaluate Hilton Transfers Incorrectly

Many travelers analyze Hilton redemptions only through the lens of Hilton points:

“How much is each Hilton point worth?”

That matters—but if your points originated as Membership Rewards, the more relevant question is:

What value did your Membership Rewards points deliver after transfer?

That distinction matters because two separate advantages are working together:

  • 1:2 Membership Rewards transfer ratio

  • Hilton 5th Night Free benefit with Silver status or higher

Combined, those can significantly reduce the real cost of a stay.

Even Without the 5th Night Free, It Can Still Work

Let’s assume the same trip was only four nights.

  • Cash price: $4,060

  • Cost: 240,000 Membership Rewards® points

That still produces:

1.69 cents per Membership Rewards® point

Even without the elite perk, that’s still a solid outcome by most standards.

Why Hilton Deserves a Second Look

Hilton redemptions absolutely vary. Some are mediocre. Some are poor.

But premium-city stays at expensive properties can produce surprisingly strong redemptions—especially when paired with transferable currencies like Membership Rewards.

The best Hilton "sweet spots” often come from:

  • Luxury hotels in high-cash markets

  • Five-night stays getting the 5th night free

  • Peak-season Europe

  • Last-minute expensive dates

  • Travelers who prioritize premium locations over maximizing theoretical CPP

Final Thoughts

Hilton points are often treated as a lower-value currency, and in many cases that assessment is fair.

But as this Paris example shows, the answer changes when you evaluate the full transaction, not just the final loyalty currency.

Instead of asking:

“What are Hilton points worth?”

A better question may be:

“What did my Amex Membership Rewards points buy me?”

In the right scenario, the answer can be: a luxury $5,129 Paris stay at over 2 cents per Membership Rewards® point.

And that’s a far better result than many people assume!
